Industrial Stairs, Platform Stairs & Crossovers for Warehouses and Plants
This category covers fixed and mobile access solutions that let staff reach elevated levels, machines and plant safely. It includes classic industrial stairs, platform stairs with their own platform, compact stair platforms, and step-over crossings for obstacles such as pipework or conveyors. The category sits within Ladders & Access Technology and complements the simpler Steps, Platforms & Work Platforms, which are meant for short, occasional work at height rather than regular access.
The main difference between the types lies in how they are used. Some stairs are permanently installed and connect two levels for good, others run on castors and can be moved to different locations. A stair platform, in turn, is the destination itself: a raised standing area reached by a few steps.
What are stairs and platform stairs used for?
They are used wherever people regularly need to overcome a height difference and a ladder would be too unsteady or too tiring.
- access to galleries, stages and mezzanine levels in the hall
- reaching machines, plant and containers
- changing work locations in workshops and production, where a mobile stair is needed
- crossing pipework, cable ducts or conveyor belts
- raised workstations reached via a stair platform
Types at a glance
The seven subcategories cover different needs. Industrial stairs are permanently installed for long term access. Platform stairs are also fixed but end at the top in a platform rather than a plain edge.
If the location changes often, the mobile platform stairs offer a compact solution for a smaller number of steps, while the rolling platform staircase is the mobile version of the platform stairs for greater heights. The stair platform, by contrast, is not a link between two levels at all, but a self contained, usually mobile standing area reached by a few steps. For crossing obstacles there are step-over crossings, stationary or mobile and compact crossover platforms as a pure transition platform without a long flight of steps.
Mobile or fixed: what suits your use case?
A fixed stair pays off when access is needed permanently at the same spot, for example to a fixed gallery or a machine platform. It stands securely, needs no locking and holds up for years even under frequent use.
If the access point moves, for example between different vehicles, containers or machines, a mobile version is more practical. Mobile platform stairs and the mobile platform staircase run on castors and can be locked in place at the point of use. Depending on the model, step counts range from a few up to more than 15, and widths are usually between 600 and 1000 mm.
What to add
Handrails are part of the standard fitting on almost all types, but can also be retrofitted individually, for example as a second rail on a stair or crossing. For ongoing operation we also stock spare parts for stairs and platforms, such as castors or fittings. Where users also need to be secured while climbing, take a look at our personal protective equipment.
If you need a permanent, fixed fall protection system instead, fixed ladders & fall protection is the better fit, while short, occasional work at height is better covered by steps, platforms & work platforms.
Safety and inspection
Fixed access to machinery, such as stairs, platforms and walkways, is governed by DIN EN ISO 14122. The standard sets requirements for incline angle, step dimensions and handrails, and is the key reference for planning and selection in this category.
Stairs and platforms used commercially must be inspected regularly by a competent person, as required by the BetrSichV. Inspection stickers document the last inspection date directly on the unit, useful for keeping track in larger halls with several access points. Also make sure the unit stands securely, especially with mobile versions: castors must be lockable at the point of use so the stair cannot roll away during use.
Advantages at a glance
- fixed and mobile types for different locations
- platform stairs with their own platform at the top
- crossings and crossover platforms for pipework, cable ducts and conveyors
- handrails for secure grip
- step counts and widths for different height differences
With this range of types you will find the right solution for almost any workplace access, whether as a permanent installation or a flexible, mobile version.
