Steps, Platforms and Work Platforms for Safe Working Heights
Once racking, machinery or vehicles rise above head height, you need a safe way up. This category covers fixed and modular solutions, from single steps to modular platforms and complete work platforms. It sits within Ladders & Access Technology alongside mobile scaffolds & rolling towers and stairs, platform stairs & crossovers.
What are steps, platforms and work platforms used for?
- maintenance and repair on machinery and plant
- picking and checking stock above head height
- de-icing vehicle roofs and trailers before loading
- fixed access to elevated control points and inspection points
- short tasks in the workshop where a ladder is too unstable
A single step is enough for a quick job at head height. Once you work longer in one spot or need both hands free, a platform or work platform with a railing is the safer choice. When you carry tools, measuring equipment or spare parts, the larger standing area pays off quickly, since you are not constantly climbing up and down. For moving between two fixed levels, the stairs, platform stairs & crossovers are usually the better fit.
Types at a glance
The category splits into three groups by main use.
If you need a mobile solution instead, check the mobile scaffolds & rolling towers or platform ladders.
Series and naming
Within the three groups you will find different series suited to different tasks. The rigid AFA P steps suit fixed, recurring control points on machinery. The modular AMA P work platform can be extended with intermediate modules as the required working height grows. Safety stairs in the Plazamax P, Plazastep P and Plazatec P series come in standard or conductive versions. More standing area for two people or bulky tools is offered by the Workmaster Plus P work platform and the XLstep P platform, each available narrow or wide. Which series fits your application depends mainly on the number of steps needed, the standing area and the material.
Material and finish
Most models come in two finishes, marked ST or VA.
- ST (steel): galvanised or powder coated, an economical choice indoors
- VA (stainless steel): corrosion resistant, suited to damp rooms, food areas and outdoor use
- conductive (dissipative) versions: certain safety stairs drain static charge, important near electronics or explosive atmospheres
- slip resistant treads: wood or profiled plastic, depending on model
The right finish depends on the environment. Steel is fine in a dry warehouse; stainless steel is the better choice near cleaning processes or food contact.
Modular systems: base, extension and add on platforms
Platforms in this category are usually a kit of parts. A base platform forms the first standing area, extension platforms lengthen it in various sizes, spacer segments match the height to existing platform decks, and connecting supports carry the structure safely. This lets you tailor the standing area to the situation on site instead of buying one fixed size. It also makes later changes easier, for example when a machine is replaced or the required working height changes: you extend the existing structure with more modules instead of building from scratch. Find extension parts under accessories for stairs and platforms.
Useful additions
Above a certain fall height, a platform needs a railing. Matching railings and railing frames fit many platform systems. Work at height often also calls for personal protective equipment. Further accessories and spare parts for your access solution are listed under accessories & spare parts.
Safety and inspection
Fixed access to machinery and plant, such as stairs and platforms, follows the DIN EN ISO 14122 series, which covers step dimensions, railing heights and handrails, among other things. Steps fall under DGUV Information 208-016, which describes safe use of ladders and steps. Regardless of the model, access equipment used commercially must be inspected regularly by a competent person under German regulations (BetrSichV), at least once a year. An inspection sticker on the item itself records the result and the next due date, so you keep track without digging through paperwork.
