Ladder Accessories & Spare Parts
A ladder is made up of many individual parts that can wear out or break on their own. This category holds the spare parts and accessories you need to keep an existing ladder in service instead of replacing it entirely. It belongs to our ladders & access equipment section, alongside leaning, multi-purpose & sliding ladders and platform ladders.
Most spare parts are wear parts: they sit at points that touch the floor, a wall, or a joint every time the ladder is used. With the right individual parts you extend a ladder's service life considerably instead of buying a whole new ladder because one foot or cap has failed.
When do you need a spare part?
Under the DGUV Information 208-016 guidance, ladders must be inspected regularly by a competent person, and damaged parts must be replaced before further use. Typical reasons to look for a spare part:
- A ladder foot is worn smooth or cracked and no longer grips reliably
- An end cap is missing, letting moisture and dirt into the rail tube
- A hinge or locking hook sticks or no longer holds the ladder safely open
- A plastic rope on a rope operated ladder has frayed
- A tray shelf or fitting is bent or broken
Replacing these parts instead of ignoring them keeps a ladder safely usable for longer.
Wear parts at the foot of the ladder
The parts at the bottom of the rails wear the most, because they touch the floor every time the ladder is set up.
- Outer feet: fit around the rail tube from the outside and give the ladder secure footing and grip, see outer ladder feet.
- Inner feet: are inserted into the open tube end and do the same job on other rail profiles, see inner ladder feet.
- End caps: close off tube ends that have no floor contact, for example at the top of the rail, see end caps.
All three parts are ordered by the inner or outer rail dimension, usually given as width by depth in millimetres.
Fittings, hinges and moving connections
Multi-purpose and step ladders only stand safely if their moving connections work properly.
- Fittings: this includes locking hooks, guide fittings for rope operated ladders, and plug in fittings that guide ladder sections together, see fittings.
- Spreader bars: hold step ladders open and stop them from folding shut unintentionally, see spreader bars.
- Rigid connectors: join struts firmly together, for example on platform ladders, see rigid connectors.
- Plastic rope: keeps the correct distance between sections on rope operated ladders, see plastic rope.
Accessories for special cases
Not every ladder stands in an ordinary warehouse. Special operating conditions have their own spare part groups.
- ESD spare parts: for use in areas with grounding requirements, such as electronics manufacturing, see electrically conductive spare parts.
- Spare parts for stairs and platforms: fixing parts for fixed staircase and platform systems, see spare parts for stairs and platforms.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): complements the ladder with protective gear for the user.
- Miscellaneous spare parts: bolts, bushings, height adjusters and other small parts that do not clearly belong to another group, see miscellaneous spare parts.
Getting the right fit before you order
Ladder spare parts are almost always made to precise dimensions. A foot or cap that is one size too small or too large will not hold securely on the rail. Before ordering you should:
- measure the rail width and depth on the damaged part or directly on the tube, sizes differ noticeably between models and series
- check the material of the old part, plastic, aluminium and cast metal behave differently under weather and load
- use the model or manufacturer code where the ladder has one, many parts only fit specific product series
- distinguish between left and right, some feet and fittings are side specific
What to watch for on safety and inspection
Under German BetrSichV rules, commercially used ladders must be inspected regularly by a competent person. Replaced wear parts are one of the points checked during this inspection. A new inspection sticker documents the inspection date directly on the ladder and gives every user clarity on the current status.
Replace damaged parts promptly. Under DGUV Information 208-016, a ladder with a cracked outer foot or a missing end cap must not be used further until it has been repaired.
Advantages at a glance
- spare parts instead of a full replacement when only one component has failed
- precise selection by rail dimension, material and model
- dedicated ranges for electrically conductive and fixed installation applications
- accessories support inspection duties and documentation directly on the ladder
With the right spare part, a well maintained ladder stays in service for many years. Check feet, caps and fittings regularly and replace worn parts before they become a safety risk.
