The type name, however, says little about what really matters: how much may go inside, which standard applies, and how to recognise solid construction.

Compartment cabinets and locker cabinets are frequently confused: in a compartment cabinet, each compartment is a separate, usually equally sized storage unit without a clothes rail. In a locker cabinet, several compartments are stacked into one narrow column – practical when many people need to lock something away briefly, such as phones or valuables before a shift.
Load capacity: what actually matters on the data sheet
Several figures circulate for cabinets that are easily confused. A look at real product data shows the difference:
- Shelf load – the weight a single shelf carries. For a sliding-door modular cabinet for sports equipment, for example, this is 80 kg per height-adjustable ball shelf.
- Maximum total load – the sum across all shelves of a cabinet. For the same cabinet this is 600 kg across four shelves – not 4 × 80 kg, because the carcass and side panels set the actual limit.
- Load capacity of the whole unit – for workbenches with a base cabinet, a combined total load is often stated, for instance up to 2,000 kg for PAVOY workbenches with a beech multiplex worktop.
The same rule from racking design applies here by analogy: shelf load and total load are two separate limits that must both be observed. A cabinet with a high total load but thin, poorly supported shelves does not help if the heaviest item has to go on a single shelf.
Material thickness as an indicator
The thickness of the steel sheet is not an official standard value, but in practice it correlates with torsional rigidity and longevity. Simple office or filing cabinets often use thinner sheet; workshop and industrial cabinets rely on more robust carcasses, reinforced door rebates, and welded rather than merely bolted shelves. One indicator of later stability: if shelves can be adjusted on a continuous hole grid (for example a 17 mm grid on PAVOY cabinets) and carry a load without visible sagging, the construction is designed for its intended purpose.
Standards and test marks: how quality can be objectively assessed
Unlike storage racking, for which DGUV Information 208-061 provides a very detailed set of rules, operational cabinets are covered by several, partly older standards:
- DIN EN 16121 – requirements for safety, strength, durability, and stability of non-domestic storage furniture, which also covers office and operational cabinets.
- DIN EN 16122 – the associated test methods: static loading of shelves, endurance tests for doors, drawers, and hinges over tens of thousands of cycles.
- DIN 4547-1 and -2 – the specific standard for lockers: Part 1 covers shapes, dimensions, and designation, Part 2 covers functional and safety requirements including tilt resistance and dimensional stability.
- GS mark ("Geprüfte Sicherheit" / tested safety) – a voluntary but meaningful test mark under the German Product Safety Act. Don't forget tip-over protection
An often-overlooked point: even a cabinet built to standard can tip over if it is not installed properly. Tall, narrow cabinets – such as single lockers or narrow compartment cabinets – become top-heavy once loaded, especially when several drawers are open at the same time. As a consequence, the German Workplace Ordinance requires cabinets to be installed so they cannot tip, or to be anchored to the wall. In practice, a simple metal bracket connecting the carcass to the wall is usually enough – a measure that should be documented as part of the risk assessment.
Lockers and changing rooms: what ASR A4.1 actually requires
For lockers in changing rooms, the German Technical Rule for Workplaces ASR A4.1 (sanitary facilities) sets out concrete minimum values that are easily underestimated when planning:
- Minimum locker dimensions: 0.30 m wide × 0.50 m deep × 1.80 m high. PAVOY personal lockers, at 2,150 mm high and 500/800 mm deep, clearly exceed this minimum.
- Movement space: at least 0.5 m² per person while changing.
- Distance between bench and locker row: at least 1.80 m, so two people can dress at the same time without getting in each other's way.

- Seating: at least one seat per four employees.
- Separation by sex: above nine employees, separate changing rooms for women and men are required; for smaller workforces, staggered, lockable use is sufficient.
Important for businesses handling hazardous substances or biological agents: if the risk assessment under the Hazardous Substances or Biological Agents Ordinance shows that everyday clothing could become contaminated, a strict separation of personal and work clothing is required. This is usually implemented with double-compartment lockers at least 600 mm wide, with two separately lockable sections – available, for example, as PAVOY personal lockers with 2 to 4 compartments – or through spatially separated changing areas with a washroom in between.
Material, coating, and colour choice
Powder-coated sheet steel is the standard for operational cabinets: robust, non-combustible, economical to maintain. In damp environments – swimming pools, washrooms, outdoor areas – corrosion protection at edges and welds, as well as alternatives such as stainless steel or solid plastic, are worth considering, even though the latter usually fall short on break-in resistance.
In terms of colour, an industry standard has become established: RAL 7035 (light grey) for the carcass, combined with coloured doors – often RAL 7016 (anthracite grey) or RAL 5010 (gentian blue). Ventilation
Ventilation slots in doors are standard on lockers and compartment cabinets and are sufficient for normal drying of work or sports clothing.
