Mobile Scaffolds & Tower Scaffolds for Working at Height
Mobile scaffolds, also called tower scaffolds, are wheeled work platforms for tasks where a leaning ladder is no longer safe enough. They consist of folding frames, a platform, guardrails and castors, and go up and down without tools. On top you stand on a solid surface with both hands free, instead of holding on to a ladder. Mobile scaffolds belong to our ladders & access equipment range and complement the platform ladders whenever you work in one spot for longer or need more than one person on the platform at a time.
What are mobile scaffolds used for?
A mobile scaffold pays off wherever a ladder reaches its limits, for example because the working height is too great, the task takes a long time, or both hands need to be free.
- Painting, plastering and drywall work on walls and ceilings
- Maintenance and cleaning of warehouses, facades and racking
- Installing lighting, cable trays and ventilation ducts
- High level warehouse tasks such as picking from tall racking
- Event and stage builds where several steps happen in the same spot
Because the platform is wider than a ladder rung, you can take tools and materials up with you directly, which saves trips and makes the work calmer. You are also not holding on with one hand, so both hands stay free for tools or materials, which reduces strain on tasks that take longer than a few minutes.
Folding scaffolds, PaxTower and outrigger models
Depending on the task, our mobile scaffolds are built up differently. The COMPACT folding scaffolds are pre configured systems of folding frames that unfold and fold back down in a few steps. Anyone who needs more working height extends the tower with add-on frames or picks a ready made PaxTower extension kit.
For work to the side of the tower, for example over a staircase or another obstacle, mobile scaffolds with outriggers are the better fit. The outrigger extends the platform sideways without moving the whole tower. Because an outrigger shifts the centre of gravity, these models always need matching ballast weights & accessories.
Working height and assembly
The models in our range go from compact folding scaffolds to tall towers with several frame levels. Typical working heights, depending on the model, range from around 3 up to more than 13 metres, and platform length often varies between 1.80 and 2.50 metres. Single and double section versions mainly differ in assembly height and the number of frame elements.
- working heights from about 3 m up to more than 13 m, depending on model and number of frames
- platform lengths commonly between 1.80 and 2.50 m
- tool free folding mechanism on the COMPACT and PaxTower models
- castors & levelling spindles with a locking function for a secure stand and easy moving
- optional outriggers for a sideways extended work area
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on maximum build height and permitted wind load. The higher the tower, the more important correct ballasting becomes.
Useful accessories
A mobile scaffold is a system of several components that together provide stability and safety. toe boards close off the edge of the platform and stop tools or material from falling off. guardrails & guardrail frames secure the platform edge against falls, and a leading guardrail can already be fitted from the level below during assembly.
Stability comes from horizontal & diagonal braces together with the matching folding frame units. When a part wears out or gets damaged, replace it individually through our spare parts for mobile scaffolds instead of replacing the whole tower.
Safety and inspection
Mobile scaffolds fall under the DIN EN 1004 standard, which covers build heights, ballasting and the requirements for guardrails and toe boards. Always assemble a mobile scaffold completely, lock the castors against rolling away, and never work on a high platform in strong wind.
Scaffolds used commercially must be inspected regularly by a competent person under German workplace safety law (BetrSichV), and DGUV Information 208-016 gives practical day to day guidance. Document inspections, for example with an inspection record, and mark the status with inspection stickers. For work at height, suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) is also recommended.
Advantages at a glance
- large, walkable platform instead of narrow rungs
- tool free assembly and dismantling on the folding models
- infinitely adjustable height using add on frames and extension kits
- outriggers for a sideways extended work area
- modular design, individual parts can be bought as spares
Whether it is a compact folding scaffold for a quick job or a tall tower with an outrigger for demanding installation work, a suitable mobile scaffold lets you work more safely and productively than on a simple ladder. For indoor work with a fixed position, also take a look at our step stools, platforms & work platforms, and for other ladder and access equipment accessories at our accessories & spare parts.
Before you decide, a short stocktake helps: how high does the platform need to reach, how often will the tower be moved, and how many people work on it at the same time. These three points usually make it clear whether a simple folding scaffold is enough or whether a model with an outrigger and extra ballasting is worthwhile.
